Payroll – Who’s Bringing Home the Bacon in Your Household?

Author: Lori S.m. Hollenback

In today’s society it’s normal to have both parents of the household work while raising children. Per certified payroll reports it’s been stated that the average weekly income for men that work full time was $766 in 2007, while women’s weekly average income was $614 in the same year. Women are only earning 80% of what men are. That’s a pretty significant difference and one would have to question if it’s partially due to men and women receiving different salaries for the same jobs because of their gender. Although, we’ve come a long way in bridging the salary gap there seems to be more work ahead of us before the payroll is consistent across all job fields. But, women can feel confident that we’ve made some steps towards pay equality. Per a 2003, report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, here’s a look at ten different job fields where the payroll differs between men and women who have the same positions, in the favor of women.

1)     This is a surprise finding, women make 24% more than men in automotive service technicians and mechanics positions with an average salary of $40,644 to $31,460.

2)    In the field of marketing, female advertising and promotions managers are earning 5% more than men with an average salary of $42,068 to $40,144.

3)    Female aerospace engineers are making an annual salary of $78,416 compared to men’s average salary of $70,356 that’s an 11% payroll gap.

4)    Female motion picture projectionists are making an annual salary of $35,412 compared to men’s salaries of $27,924.

5)    In the field of politics, female legislators are making an annual salary of $43,316 compared to men’s salaries of $32,656 that’s a 33% gap.

6)    Female motor vehicle operators make 23% more than men with an average annual salary of $22,412 compared to $18,252.

7)    The occupation of crossing guard holds a 13% gap between men and women with average annual salaries at $18,824 and $16,640.

8)    Female radiation therapists bring in $59,124 compared to $53,300 for men.

9)    Female human resource assistants excluding payroll and timekeeping positions bring in 9% more annually than men with salaries of $30,420 and $28,028.

Finally, the tenth occupation where females make the bigger payroll over men is the job of sales engineers. Women make a whopping 43% more than men with an average salary of $89,908 compared to $62,660.

These are just ten examples recorded in 2003, where women are not only closing the salary gap in equal pay they are exceeding it. As we finish the year of 2008, one can only wonder if we’ve closed that gap even more. After all, per Senator Clinton and Senator Palin, there are now 18 million cracks in that glass ceiling. Now seems like a good as time as any to break through the glass ceiling of equal pay.
